Carved by tide and time, this limestone arch is one of New Zealand’s most iconic vistas—usually alive with travellers. Yet after Covid began, when only locals could reach the Coromandel Peninsula, I had the rare privilege of standing here among only a few other visitors. From the cool hush of the cave I captured the reference photo for this acrylic painting free of many footprints and crowds, the warm Pacific sliding in as turquoise glass and sunlit shallows. This painting preserves that unguarded moment: a vaulted aisle of stone opening onto sea and sky, inviting you to step forward, feel the water lap at your feet, and savour the views of one of the most beautiful places in all of Aotearoa.
